Greta's Ark Rescue was founded in October of 2019. We have rescued and found homes for over 500 dogs since then!

We are foster home based in southern Louisiana, or more specifically, the greater New Orleans area. We do not currently have a public facility - we are appointment only.

We only adopt to those who have an excellent history of pet ownership. Most of our dogs come from unknown backgrounds and may have behavioral issues, medical concerns or needs specific to their breed. We strive to place our dogs in the best homes that fit their individual needs. Often times these dogs do not make good pets for first time pet owners. We do sometimes have dogs that would be excellent candidates for first time pet owners, therefore we can make exceptions on a case by case basis depending on the dog and the applicant.

First, you must fill out an application.

The time it takes to hear back varies, but can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks. Personal life and tending to the dogs veterinary needs comes first. We are just volunteers and have to run the rescue in our spare time. If you'd like to check the status of an application, the best way to do that is to email us or send us a message on Facebook. We unfortunately cannot respond to every single applicant, but if you are approved you will hear back from us by text message or email. Once you hear from us, we'll ask for veterinary records on your current and previous pets. You can contact your veterinarian and have them forward the full chart for each of your pets to your email to speed up the process. We look for consistency in care: annual exams and heartworm testing, consistent heartworm and flea prevention, vaccines, spay/neuter status, and other details that can help us decide if we feel comfortable approving your application. We will also ask for pictures of your pets, home, and yard. We will also schedule a phone call to discuss compatibility of the dog you applied for and ensure a smooth adoption process. We offer a 2-3 week foster-to-adopt period for local adopters up to 1 hour away or within driving distance of the rescue.

Every dog that comes into our rescue will be examined by a veterinarian, spayed/neutered, microchipped, tested for heartworms, and given age appropriate vaccinations including DAPP, bordatella, and rabies. Every dog receives heartworm, flea prevention and dewormer on a monthly basis. Every dog will be well groomed by the rescue or professionally.

Most if not all of our senior dogs receive a full blood panel, and many of them require additional testing such as urinalysis, xrays, and biopsies. Many require major dental surgery or tumor removals. We have performed MRIs and CT scans to diagnose brain tumors, neurological issues, or spinal injuries. We have done countless life-changing surgeries such as enculeations, amputations, FHOs, hernia repairs, orthopedic repairs, and more. We also provide end of life care and cremation.

For dogs that test positive for heartworms, we cover a 6 month heartworm preventative shot and the first 30 days of antibiotics. We often cover fast kill heartworm treatment through our local veterinarian if the funds are available.

In addition to the medical costs for each dog, they also need to eat. We have to buy dog food, collars, leashes, harnesses, ID tags, toys, puppy pads, bedding, kennels, special shampoos, ear and eye medications, and so much more.

Other overhead expenses include storage unit fees, auto insurance, maintenance, gas, and supplies for our transport van. We also have subscription plans that help us store and access files for the rescue, website domain fees, and even amazon prime to help us receive wishlist donations and quick delivery for much needed supplies.

There is so much that goes into running the rescue. The best way to help with these expenses is to make a recurring monthly donation. Even $10 from everyone adds up. You can set up a monthly donation through our PayPal.
